Orange Beach Alabama Boats Lifts Docks

As a Gulf Coast real estate advisor, I’m often asked by buyers, “What size boat lift or slip will I need?” Whether you’re docking a center console, sportfish, or pontoon, sizing your lift and slip properly is crucial to protecting your investment and ensuring smooth access to the water.

Let’s break it down with some practical, experience-backed rules of thumb I use when advising clients on boat-ready homes here in Orange Beach, Ono Island, and along the Intracoastal Waterway.

 Boat Lift Sizing: Capacity & Cradle Width

A. Lift Capacity (Weight Matters)
Always account for more than just the dry weight of your boat. Add 20–25% to cover fuel, water, gear, electronics, and people.

Example:
Dry weight = 8,000 lbs
Add 20–25% = 1,600–2,000 lbs
Recommended Lift = 10,000 lbs

It’s better to slightly overshoot than risk strain on your motor or frame. In saltwater environments like ours, durability matters.

B. Cradle Width (Beam Width + 12")
The cradle should extend at least 12 inches wider than your boat’s beam to avoid damage when loading.

Example:
Beam = 9’6” → Cradle Width = Minimum 10’6”

I always recommend measuring twice and verifying with your lift installer or marine contractor—especially in tight canals or around existing docks on Ono Island.

 Slip Sizing: Allow Room to Breathe

A. Slip Length (LOA + 2–4 ft)
Your slip should be at least 2–4 feet longer than your LOA (Length Overall) for stress-free maneuvering.

Example:
LOA = 26’ → Slip Length = 28–30 ft

Even with bow thrusters or joystick control, a little extra length can save you from scratches—or worse—in a strong crosswind off Perdido Pass.

B. Slip Width (Beam + 1–2 ft)
Give yourself wiggle room. I often see slips that are too tight, especially with boats having wide rub rails or fenders.

Example:
Beam = 9’ → Slip Width = 10–11 ft

 Quick Reference Table

Boat LOABeam RangeLift CapacityRecommended Slip Size (L x W)
20–24 ft 8–8.5 ft 6,000–7,000 lbs 26 x 10 ft
25–28 ft 8.5–9.5 ft 8,000–10,000 lbs 30 x 11 ft
29–32 ft 9.5–10.5 ft 10,000–12,000 lbs 34 x 12 ft
33–36 ft 10.5–11.5 ft 14,000–16,000 lbs 38 x 13 ft
37–40 ft 11.5–13 ft 18,000–20,000+ lbs 42 x 14 ft

✅ Other Considerations

T-Top or Hardtop Clearance
Don’t forget to account for the overhead height of your boat. If you’re building a roofed boathouse or lift canopy, make sure it clears your tallest fixed point.

Water Depth
Bigger boats and lifts require deeper water. On Ono Island, we always evaluate seasonal low tides and the draft of the boat. Talk to neighbors and get depth readings.

Permit & ACC Rules
Every waterfront property on Ono Island must comply with the Architectural Control Committee (ACC) and potentially Army Corps of Engineers when modifying or expanding piers or lifts. I help buyers interpret the restrictions and setbacks—many of which vary by canal width, location, and view corridor.

"Boat lifts should not interfere with navigation or neighbor views. Size, setback, and roof height may be restricted by the ACC. Always submit plans for review."
