Ono Island Notes | Coastal Living
Yes, There Are Coyotes on Ono Island, and Here’s What I’ve Learned Living Here
By Meredith Folger Amon, Licensed In Alabama and Florida
There are mornings on Ono Island when the air smells like bay brine and damp pine straw, and the whole place feels hushed in that soft, coastal way. It is the kind of quiet that makes you listen, even when you are just stepping outside with a cup of coffee. Every now and then, that listening turns into a simple question I get from new residents and soon-to-be residents.
“Are there coyotes on Ono Island?”
A question I hear often when buyers are learning the rhythms of coastal living
Are there coyotes on Ono Island
Yes. Coyotes are present on Ono Island. They are not an everyday sighting for me, but they exist here the way they do in many coastal and wooded communities across the South.
Do you see them often
I have only seen coyotes occasionally, about once a year. My sightings have been quick, the kind that happen at the edge of the day, when the light is thin and the island feels especially quiet. They move with purpose, then disappear back into the brush line before you have time to do anything except notice.
“They are here, but they are not the headline.”
How I describe coyotes on Ono Island to people who are new to the area
Are coyotes dangerous to humans
In my own experience, I have never felt in danger. That said, I always treat wildlife with respect. Coyotes are wild animals. They are typically cautious around people, and when they do appear, it tends to be brief and at a distance.
The one practical rule I follow
I do make sure that pets are not left outside and exposed to them, especially at night and in those early morning hours when wildlife is more active. It is the same advice I would give in any area where coyotes exist. Be aware, be smart, and do not create an easy opportunity.
- Bring pets inside after dusk and before sunrise
- Keep pet food put away and trash secured
- Use a leash and keep your head up on quieter roads and paths
- If you spot a coyote nearby, calmly move indoors and give it space
What this means for living on Ono Island
The presence of coyotes does not define Ono Island. It is simply part of living in a place with trees, marsh edges, and that beautiful seam where neighborhoods meet the natural world. Most days, the island’s “soundtrack” is frogs at night, a barred owl in the distance, and the faint clink of marina rigging when the wind shifts.
If you are considering buying on Ono Island, I always recommend learning the everyday rhythms, not just the headlines. I share a lot of local notes like this on my site, and you can explore current listings anytime at www.searchthegulf.com.
