Why a Mid-30-Foot Freeman Makes Sense in Orange Beach, Alabama

Freeman Boat Orange Beach Alabama

When I see a boat like this running off Orange Beach, I understand why so many waterfront buyers light up when they start talking about slips, lifts, canal width, and quick access to the pass.  This appears to be a Freeman offshore center-console catamaran in the mid-30-foot class, most likely in the Freeman 34VH, 35, or 37/38 family. Freeman’s specs for those models place them in roughly that size range, with beams around 10'10" to 11'6" and shallow drafts that suit serious Gulf Coast boating remarkably well.

That matters in our market because a boat is not just a toy here. It can shape the kind of property that makes sense for a buyer. On Ono Island and across boater-focused parts of Orange Beach, I often think about the real-world relationship between the boat and the property: beam, draft, lift capacity, canal maneuverability, dock layout, and whether the owner wants easy runs to offshore fishing grounds or a more protected inshore setup. Boats in this Freeman class tend to fit the buyer who wants serious capability, strong ride quality, and a platform that can handle both fishing and fast Gulf Coast runs. Freeman markets these boats around offshore capability, storage, fuel capacity, livewells, rod holders, and dive-door utility, which is exactly why they are so often associated with committed fishing owners rather than casual day use alone.

“In Orange Beach, a boat like this is more than a beautiful machine on the water. It helps define the kind of property, dock, lift, and boating lifestyle that truly fits the buyer.”

Is a Freeman Like This Good for Fishing?

Yes, very much so. This is the kind of platform serious offshore anglers are drawn to because the design prioritizes fishability and range. On Freeman’s official model pages, the 35 and 38 are described with features such as large insulated boxes, livewells, rod holders, electric reel plugs, dive-door access, and substantial fuel capacity. In practical terms, that means a boat that can chase a tournament mindset one day and still feel comfortable and capable for a fast run out on another. If a buyer tells me they want a home that supports a true fishing lifestyle, this is exactly the kind of boat profile I start picturing when we talk about boating properties on the Gulf Coast

How Fast Does a Boat Like This Go?

Speed depends on the exact model and power package, The Freeman 35 is listed with a typical cruise of 43 mph, while the Freeman 38 is listed with a typical cruise of 38 mph at 1.28 mpg. Freeman’s legacy 34VH is described as pushing top speed and fuel efficiency, and current market listings reinforce that these boats are built for high-performance offshore running. A current 2024 Freeman 37 listing, for example, describes efficient cruising around 43 knots, which is roughly 49 mph. For Orange Beach owners, that kind of speed and offshore confidence can make a real difference in how usable the boat feels on a wider range of fishing and boating days.

What Size Is It, Really?

If I were guiding someone through property fit, I would frame this boat as a mid-30-foot Freeman cat with an extra-wide beam. Freeman’s official specs list the 34VH at 33'7" with a 10'10" beam and 18" draft, the 35 at 35'10" with an 11'6" beam and 24" draft, and the 38 at 37'8" with an 11'6" beam and 21" draft. That beam is one of the biggest real-estate considerations because it affects slip width, lift geometry, turning room, and how comfortable the owner feels in tighter canal situations. A buyer shopping waterfront should not only ask whether a dock exists, but whether the dock and lift truly match the boat they plan to own.

What Kind of Boat Lift Does It Need?

This is where I always slow the conversation down. Lift sizing should be based on the exact model, engine package, fuel load, equipment, and bunk geometry, not just the length on paper. Freeman’s legacy 34VH is about 9,000 pounds dry with engines and roughly 12,500 pounds ready to fish; the 35 is about 12,300 pounds dry with engines and roughly 16,500 pounds ready to fish; and the 38 is about 12,500 pounds dry with engines and roughly 16,700 pounds ready to fish. My practical view is that a buyer considering a Freeman in this class needs a properly engineered catamaran lift setup, often in the 16,000- to 24,000-pound range depending on the exact boat, with the final answer verified by a qualified lift installer. The width and bunk spacing matter just as much as the rated capacity.

What Does a Brand-New One Cost?

New pricing depends heavily on the model and options. Currently, a 2026 Freeman 35 at about $729,000, while the current Freeman 38 is roughly $1,029,725 new, and high-$900,000s for some recent inventory. If this is the kind of boat a buyer has in mind, it has real implications for the kind of waterfront property, lift, and dock investment that will make sense alongside it.

Why This Matters in Real Estate

This is exactly why I enjoy the overlap between boats and property so much. A boat like this is fast, capable, visually striking, and highly functional, but it also asks something of the real estate. It asks for the right lift. The right depth. The right width. The right dock approach. The right canal or big-water location. It is one more reason why boating real estate on the Gulf Coast is so nuanced, and why buyers looking in Orange Beach and Ono Island benefit from working with someone who understands how the boat and the property need to work together.

If this article helped, drop me a quick note. I’m always happy to help buyers think through the boating side of a property search, whether the priority is offshore fishing, canal access, lift planning, or simply finding a home that supports the lifestyle they really want. Call or text me here:
