Is There Natural Gas on Ono Island?

What Buyers and Homeowners Should Know About Propane Tanks, Gas Stoves, Fireplaces, and Outdoor Kitchens

ono island
One of the questions I hear quite a bit from buyers looking at Ono Island homes is whether natural gas is available. The short answer is no. Ono Island does not have natural gas service, so homes that want gas for cooking, fireplaces, tankless water heaters, generators, or outdoor living areas typically use propane instead. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
“In my experience, propane on Ono Island is not unusual at all. It is simply part of how many homes here are designed to function well.”

I actually think this surprises some buyers at first, especially those moving from areas where natural gas is more common. But on Ono Island, buried propane tanks are a very normal part of the landscape. In many cases, they are installed underground on the lot so they do not interrupt the look of the property. That matters on the island, where homeowners often want the exterior to feel clean, coastal, and uncluttered. Many propane systems are set up for routine delivery and monitoring, and propane providers serving the Orange Beach area offer residential delivery, installation, and ongoing service.

How Buried Propane Tanks Typically Work

Most of the time, a buried propane tank is installed in the yard and connected to the home through gas piping. The visible portion is usually minimal, often just the lid or access point. Once in place, the tank is filled by a propane company that services the property. Some homeowners arrange regular deliveries, while others have systems that are monitored so the provider knows when it is time to refill the tank. Local propane companies in the Orange Beach area advertise scheduled and will-call deliveries, as well as installation and safety testing for residential propane systems.

From a practical standpoint, that means you do not have to give up the conveniences of gas just because there is no natural gas line on the island. You simply use propane instead.

What I usually tell buyers to ask

Is there already a buried propane tank on the property?

Which appliances are currently connected to propane?

Is the tank owned or leased through a propane company?

Is there a monitor or automatic refill arrangement in place?

When was the system last serviced or inspected?

What If I Want a Gas Stove?

If you want a gas stove on Ono Island, that is usually very doable. Many homes already use propane for cooking, and if the house does not currently have a gas range, a licensed professional can often run the appropriate propane line and make sure the appliance is properly set up. I have walked through homes on the island where propane serves the cooktop, the tankless water heater, and sometimes even a standby generator.

For buyers who love to cook, this is good news. A lack of natural gas does not mean you have to settle for an all-electric kitchen if gas cooking is important to you.

What About a Gas Fireplace?

The same idea applies to fireplaces. If you want a gas fireplace, propane can usually serve that need as well. Some homes are already set up for gas logs or gas fireplaces, and others can often be adapted during a remodel or new construction project with proper planning. Gulf Coast gas service companies specifically advertise propane piping for fireplaces and gas logs in homes across Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}

On a practical level, I think a fireplace can still make a lot of sense on the Gulf Coast. We may not have long winters, but we absolutely have cool evenings that make a living room or covered porch feel especially inviting with a little warmth and ambiance.

Can I Have an Outdoor Kitchen?

Yes, in many cases you can. If you are dreaming about an outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill, side burner, lanterns, or even a fire feature, propane is often the way to make that happen on Ono Island. Propane providers and licensed gas installers in the area specifically market service for grills, outdoor kitchens, and patio features.

I think this is one of the reasons propane works so well for island living. It gives homeowners flexibility. You can create a beautiful outdoor entertaining space without relying on natural gas infrastructure that simply is not there.

“If you want the warmth of a fireplace, the ease of a gas cooktop, or an outdoor kitchen designed for coastal entertaining, propane is usually the answer on Ono Island.”

A Few Safety and Ownership Thoughts

Whenever propane is involved, I always recommend buyers ask a few extra questions during the due diligence period. It is wise to confirm who services the tank, whether the tank is owned or leased, and whether all gas appliances were professionally installed. Alabama’s Liquefied Petroleum Gas Board regulates the LP-gas industry in the state, and Alabama law also requires calling 811 before digging, which is especially important when underground utility lines or tanks may be present.

That does not mean propane is something to worry about. It simply means it should be understood, just like docks, lifts, generators, and other specialty features that often come with coastal homes with boating amenities.

My Honest Take

In my opinion, the lack of natural gas on Ono Island is not a drawback the way some buyers initially think it might be. It is just part of the island’s utility setup. Once buyers understand that buried propane tanks are common, discreet, and routinely serviced, most feel much more comfortable.

I have found that what really matters is not whether a house has natural gas. What matters is whether the home is already set up for the features you want, or whether it can be configured to support them. If you want a gas stove, fireplace, tankless water heater, generator, or outdoor kitchen, propane often makes all of that possible on Ono Island.
