How to update an Alabama driver’s license in Baldwin County
In Baldwin County, most driver’s license “updates” run through the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) system, even if you schedule an appointment locally. Here’s the clean way to handle it, depending on what you mean by “update.”
1) If you just need to update your address in the system (no new card)
- Fastest: Use ALEA’s online address change tool (linked from Baldwin County’s official guidance).
- Good to know: ALEA notes you can update the address in the database without charge, but they will not automatically reissue a new license/card unless you purchase a replacement with the new address.
2) If you want a new physical license with the updated address (replacement)
- Do a replacement (sometimes called a duplicate) so the printed card matches your new address.
- Baldwin County notes renewals/replacements can be handled online at ALEA’s portal or in person through a probate licensing office.
3) If you’re renewing
- Renew online if you’re eligible, or schedule an in-person appointment through the local Baldwin County system (their site points to both options).
4) If you’re changing your name
- ALEA indicates you’ll need to go in person (probate/licensing office or an ALEA Driver License Office) with your legal name-change documents (marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, etc.), plus proof your name has been updated with Social Security.
5) If you need a STAR ID (for flights/federal access)
- STAR ID requires specific document categories (identity/DOB, Social Security number, and proof of principal residence). Use ALEA’s STAR ID document list to confirm what to bring before you go.
- Baldwin County reminds residents that STAR ID (or a passport) is required for certain federal purposes, and their renew/replace page flags this clearly.

If you prefer paper mail for an address change
ALEA provides a one-page “Driver License or Identification Card Change of Address” form (DL-99). It includes the mailing address for ALEA Licensing Services Division in Montgomery.
