When I walk or drive down Shoalwater Drive on Ono Island, I’m always reminded why it’s one of the most sought-after streets for boaters on the entire Gulf Coast. As both a homeowner and a real estate advisor here, I know firsthand how rare it is to find a location that checks every box—wide canal frontage, deep water, quick access to big water, and gorgeous natural surroundings. Shoalwater has it all.
Shoalwater Drive sits on an exceptionally wide 60-foot canal that’s been dredged to a depth of approximately 6 feet, providing generous clearance for larger boats. The canal is designed for easy navigation, even for vessels with significant beam or draft, and includes ample room to turn around. One of the biggest perks? There are no bridges to pass under, so whether you're headed to Bayou St. John, the Intracoastal Waterway, or the Gulf, you have a straight shot out.
This is one of the few areas on Ono Island where you’ll find highly elevated lots that sit above flood zones and are adorned with mature trees and lush vegetation. That elevation brings not only peace of mind but sweeping views and breezes off the water. Many homes here face south—an ideal orientation that captures natural light throughout the day and soft, golden evenings.
Shoalwater Drive is located in the Ono Escape section, near the mouth of Bayou St. John. This positioning makes it incredibly easy to launch a boat and reach the big water quickly. Whether you’re fishing, cruising to the pass, or heading over to your favorite restaurant by boat, you’re already halfway there the moment you untie from the dock.
It’s also one of the most peaceful spots on the island. Set on a quiet cul-de-sac, Shoalwater has very little through traffic. The vibe is laid-back, friendly, and unhurried—exactly what so many of us come to Ono Island to enjoy.
Shoalwater Drive is home to some of the island’s most impressive canal-front properties, ranging from classic coastal cottages to larger estates with 3,000 to 5,000+ square feet of living space. Most homes here are built with the goal of entertaining, relaxing, and enjoying waterfront life to the fullest. Several properties include outdoor kitchens, pools, boathouses with lifts, and wraparound porches that take full advantage of the canal views.
Some of my favorite sales on Shoalwater have included stunning custom homes on oversized lots, like the rare corner parcel at the intersection of Shoalwater and Dolphin, which offered nearly an acre of land with outstanding views and direct boating access.
If you’re considering building your dream home, Shoalwater offers some of the largest and most elevated canal lots on Ono Island. Whether you're planning for a luxurious full-time residence or a second home designed for boating and entertaining, the location simply can't be beat.
As a local expert, I can help you identify which homes or lots offer the best water depth, sun exposure, and access to amenities like the Ono Island Recreation Center, just minutes away.
If you’ve been dreaming of a true waterfront lifestyle where you can keep your boat in the backyard, launch at a moment’s notice, and unwind in a peaceful, natural setting—Shoalwater Drive is worth a closer look.

Orientation: Light, Breeze, and View — Living with the Elements on Ono Island
There’s something deeply Southern about the way Ono Island breathes — the salt air, the sway of marsh grass, and the rhythm of tide and light. Here along Old River, the sun and wind dictate the day as surely as the church bells…
