Best For Easter, Christmas, brunches, and easy entertaining

When I want something timeless, beautiful, and easy to serve, a spiral ham is one of my favorite centerpieces. It feels elegant without being difficult, and it fills the kitchen with the kind of warm aroma that instantly makes a gathering feel complete. This version gives you that honey baked ham inspired finish with a tender spiral ham, a glossy glaze, and a lightly caramelized surface.

A spiral ham is one of those dishes that looks generous and celebratory on the table, yet it is wonderfully practical for entertaining.

I also love that you can tailor the glaze depending on the mood of the meal. Below, I have included four optional glaze recipes so you can go classic, citrusy, slightly savory, or a little deeper and richer. Ingredients for the Ham

Main Ingredients

  • 1 fully cooked spiral sliced ham, about 8 to 10 pounds
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

For the Finishing Layer

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika

This finishing blend helps give the outside a beautiful caramelized look near the end of baking.

Optional Glaze Recipes

Choose one glaze below, or make a double batch if you like extra sauce for serving at the table.

1. Classic Honey Brown Sugar Glaze

  • 1 cup honey
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

This is the most classic option and the closest to a traditional honey baked ham style glaze.

2. Orange Clove Glaze

  • 3/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup orange marmalade
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

This one has a brighter, slightly festive flavor and is lovely for spring or holiday brunch.

3. Pineapple Dijon Glaze

  • 3/4 cup pineapple juice
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika

This glaze adds a tropical note that feels right at home for Gulf Coast entertaining.

4. Maple Brown Sugar Glaze

  • 3/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

This option is slightly deeper and richer, with a beautiful balance of sweetness and warmth.

How to Make Any of the Glazes

Combine the glaze ingredients in a saucepan over low to medium heat. Stir until the butter is melted and the sugar has dissolved. Let it simmer very gently for 3 to 5 minutes, just until smooth and slightly thickened. Do not boil it hard. The glaze should remain glossy and pourable.

How I Bake the Ham

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Place the spiral ham cut side down in a roasting pan or large baking dish.
  2. Brush the outside lightly. Mix the melted butter, honey, and Dijon mustard, then brush it over the outside of the ham for a rich base layer.
  3. Cover loosely with foil. Bake for about 10 to 12 minutes per pound, just until the ham is warmed through. Since the ham is already fully cooked, the goal is gentle reheating.
  4. Begin glazing during the final 45 minutes. Remove the foil and brush or spoon the glaze over the ham, allowing some to settle into the slices.
  5. Return to the oven uncovered. Glaze again every 15 minutes so the layers build gradually and develop a glossy finish.
  6. Add the finishing mixture near the end. Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and smoked paprika, then sprinkle it over the glazed surface during the last 10 minutes of baking.
  7. Broil briefly if desired. For a more caramelized exterior, place the ham under the broiler for 1 to 3 minutes, watching closely so the sugar does not burn.
  8. Rest before serving. Let the ham rest for 10 to 15 minutes, then spoon a little extra warm glaze over the top and gently fan open the slices for serving.

Serving Suggestions

Side Dishes I Love With This

  • Scalloped potatoes
  • Roasted sweet potatoes
  • Green beans
  • Deviled eggs
  • Buttery rolls
  • A crisp citrus or spring salad

Leftover Ideas

  • Ham sliders
  • Breakfast casseroles
  • Omelets and quiches
  • Biscuits with ham and honey mustard
  • Ham and cheese sandwiches the next day

My Tips for the Best Spiral Ham

  • Start with a fully cooked spiral sliced ham so you are simply warming and glazing it.
  • Keep it covered for most of the baking time to hold in moisture.
  • Apply the glaze in layers rather than all at once.
  • If you have flavorful juices in the roasting pan, stir a tablespoon into the glaze near the end for more depth.
  • Use the broiler only briefly and watch carefully.

A Beautiful Main Dish for Entertaining

This is one of those recipes that feels polished enough for a holiday table but easy enough to make without stress. It is a lovely choice for Easter lunch, Christmas dinner, or any occasion when you want the table to feel warm and inviting.
