How to Measure a Boat Lift to See What Size Boat It Can Accommodate
A practical Gulf Coast guide for waterfront buyers, sellers, boaters, and dock-minded homeowners.
When I am looking at a waterfront property on Ono Island or in Orange Beach, I never look at a boat lift as just “a lift.” I look at it as part of the property’s boating infrastructure — much like a garage, only more specialized, more valuable, and often more expensive to modify.
“A boat lift is not measured by length alone. It has to match the boat’s weight, beam, hull shape, water depth, and the way the boat actually sits on the bunks.”
Start With Lift Capacity
The most important number is the rated weight capacity of the lift. Look for a manufacturer plate, motor label, permit records, installer invoice, or lift documentation.
- 10,000 lb lift
- 13,000 lb lift
- 16,000 lb lift
- 20,000 lb lift
- 30,000 lb lift or larger
The boat’s fully loaded weight should be comfortably under the lift rating.
Measure Inside Width
Measure the inside width between the lift pilings or guideposts. This tells you whether the boat can physically fit into the slip and lift area.

- Clearance between dock edges
- Whether the boat can enter straight or must angle in
A wide catamaran-style boat such as a Freeman, Invincible, Caymas, or World Cat may need more beam clearance than a traditional monohull of similar length.
Measure Bunk Length & Spacing
The bunks are what actually support the boat hull. Measure the length of each bunk, the distance between the bunks, the height and angle of the bunks, and whether the setup fits the hull type.

For high-performance offshore boats and catamarans, bunk fit becomes especially important. This is where I like to see a qualified lift installer or marine contractor evaluate the setup before a buyer assumes the lift will work.
Check Water Depth at Low Tide
A lift may have the right capacity and width, but the water depth may still be the limiting factor.
- Measure at normal tide
- Measure at low tide
- Measure under the lift
- Measure along the approach into the slip
- Consider the canal, bay, or waterway access point

Measure Vertical Clearance
Vertical clearance is often overlooked. Check the distance between the waterline and any overhead structure.
- Boathouse roof
- Cross beams
- Upper deck
- Walkway
- Lights
- Boat canopy
- Lift motors or cradle structure
This is especially important for boats with hardtops, towers, radar arrays, outriggers, antennas, and upper stations.
Real-Life Example
The front pilings are 8.7 feet apart. The back pilings are 8.7 feet apart. The distance between the front and back pilings is 9 feet. This has a 10,000 pound lift and can accomodate a 25 foot boat.
I am using this photo as an example of a covered boat slip located on a canal on Ono Island. This particular setting is on one of Ono Island’s larger canals, positioned between Ono Boulevard and St. John Drive, offering the kind of protected canal-front boating access that many Gulf Coast boaters appreciate.
One of the appealing features of this type of setup is the existing covered lift, which helps create a convenient place to keep a boat protected and ready for use. Based on the example measurements — approximately 8.7 feet between the front pilings, 8.7 feet between the rear pilings, approximately 9 feet between the front and rear pilings, and a 10,000 lb lift — this style of slip may work beautifully for many popular inshore and nearshore boats.

In my opinion, this type of lift setup is especially practical for a bay boat, flats boat, skiff, smaller center console, or compact dual-console. Boats in the approximate 18- to 22-foot range, with a beam around 8 feet to 8 feet 3 inches, are often the types of models I would begin reviewing for a slip like this. The final fit depends on the specific hull design, rub rail width, loaded weight, T-top or hardtop height, bunk configuration, water depth, and motor tilt clearance.
Examples of boat models that may be worth exploring for this type of lift include the Boston Whaler 190 Montauk, Key West 203 FS, Sea Hunt Ultra 219, NauticStar 211 Hybrid, and similar bay boat or center-console models with comparable beam and weight specifications. These boats can offer a nice blend of easy handling, fishing capability, cruising comfort, and everyday usability for the Ono Island and Orange Beach boating lifestyle.
What I love about this canal-front style of boating is the simplicity. A covered boat slip on Ono Island can make spontaneous time on the water feel effortless — whether that means idling through the canals, heading toward Bayou St. John, running toward Perdido Pass, or enjoying the back bays before the sun starts to soften over the water.
As with any waterfront property, I recommend confirming the final boat fit with a marine contractor, boat dealer, or lift company before purchasing a specific vessel. Lift capacity is only one part of the equation. The best evaluation also considers beam, loaded weight, bunk placement, roof clearance, motor clearance, water depth, and the approach angle into the slip.
Confirm Overall Fit
Length matters too — especially for the slip approach, overhang, cradle position, and safe maneuverability.
I also like to inspect the cradle system, cables, cable size, number of cables, cradle beams, motors, gearboxes, pulleys, limit switches, remote controls, and electrical service.

Compare the Boat’s Full Specs to the Lift
To determine compatibility, gather the boat’s specifications and compare them carefully against the lift, the water depth, the dock configuration, and the approach.

My Practical Rule of Thumb
I like to see a margin of safety. I do not like seeing a boat that is right at the edge of a lift’s rated capacity.
For example, if a boat weighs close to 10,000 pounds fully loaded, I would be much more comfortable discussing a larger-capacity lift rather than assuming a 10,000-pound lift is “good enough.”
That is especially true in saltwater environments, where wear, corrosion, storms, wind, tide, and daily use all matter.

What I Look For When Showing Waterfront Property
When I am walking a waterfront property with a boating-minded buyer, I usually ask:
- What boat do you own now?
- What boat do you realistically want next?
- Is it a center console, catamaran, bay boat, yacht tender, or sportfishing boat?
- Do you need quick access to Perdido Pass?
- Will you use Orange Beach Marina, The Wharf Marina, Zeke’s, or Sportsman Marina?
- Is the lift compatible today, or will the dock need improvements?
