Living along the Gulf Coast, I’m always inspired by the people who’ve risen from small towns and Southern roots to make a national—or even global—impact. So who holds the title of the most famous person from Alabama today?
The truth is, it’s hard to pick just one. Alabama has birthed legends in politics, sports, music, and entertainment. Depending on who you ask and what inspires you most, that “most famous” title might change. But here are a few names that I hear come up time and again.
Brittney Howard, the powerhouse vocalist of Alabama Shakes, is another standout. She was born in Athens, Alabama, and her soulful voice and unapologetic artistry have captured international recognition. Many of my friends still talk about seeing her perform in small venues long before she hit the national stage.
Charles Barkley
If you’ve ever watched basketball or tuned into Inside the NBA, you know Barkley. Born in Leeds, Alabama, he’s a Hall of Fame NBA player, a charismatic TV personality, and one of the most recognizable voices in sports commentary. His unfiltered takes, humor, and loyalty to his Alabama roots keep him top of mind in conversations.
If we’re talking about impact, Condoleezza Rice also comes to mind. Born in Birmingham, she became one of the most influential women in politics and academia. Her story is one of perseverance, strength, and brilliance—a true daughter of the South.
Lionel Richie
A music legend with Alabama roots, Lionel Richie was born and raised in Tuskegee. From the Commodores to his solo career, his songs like "Hello", "All Night Long", and "Endless Love" have been the soundtrack to so many lives. I’ve had more than one neighbor say he’s their all-time favorite Alabama-born star.

An Oscar-winning actress from Montgomery, Octavia has brought depth and strength to every role she plays, whether in The Help, Hidden Figures, or her work behind the camera. Her success is a reminder that Alabama continues to contribute powerfully to the world of film.
While it’s hard to crown just one as the “most famous,” the answer often depends on who you ask and what inspires you. Whether it’s Hollywood, sports, music, or leadership, Alabama continues to produce individuals who shape culture on a global scale. And that makes me proud to call this place home.
