Ono Island is one of the most beautiful and exclusive waterfront communities along Alabama’s Gulf Coast—but insuring a home here comes with unique considerations. As a homeowner on Ono Island myself and a trusted local real estate advisor, I’m often asked about current insurance trends, recommended providers, and what new homeowners should expect when purchasing a property on this private, gated island.
Because Ono Island is classified as a barrier island, insurance options are more limited and regulated than in other areas. While this location offers incredible water access and privacy, it also presents increased exposure to coastal weather events, which affects coverage availability and premium pricing.
One major change we’ve seen recently is that State Farm is no longer writing new policies on barrier islands, including Ono Island. This shift has left many homeowners and buyers searching for alternative options with companies that still understand and specialize in coastal markets.
One of the more widely used insurance carriers on Ono Island today is Frontline. They've remained active in coastal areas where many others have backed out, and they are often recommended by local agencies for their competitive rates and coverage structure. However, it’s important to note that Frontline has tightened their underwriting requirements. For example, they now require fencing around swimming pools to meet liability standards—something to keep in mind if your property includes or plans to add a pool.

When buying or selling a home on Ono Island, I recommend getting a quote in advance—ideally during the due diligence period. This ensures there are no surprises later in the transaction, especially when it comes to wind and flood premiums. If you're purchasing a home with a grandfathered flood policy, you may also want to consider assuming the current policy, which can lock in favorable rates.
It’s also wise to discuss pool enclosures, roof age, and fortification levels, as these significantly influence your premiums. With changing guidelines and fewer providers, being proactive makes all the difference.
