Considering a Swimming Pool on the Gulf Coast? Let’s Talk Fiberglass vs. Gunite

Gunite Fiberglass Swimming Pools Gulf Coast

Adding a swimming pool to your property here in Baldwin County, Alabama is not only a lifestyle upgrade, it’s also a valuable investment—especially when it complements our warm Gulf Coast climate. Whether you’re building in Orange Beach, Ono Island, Fairhope, or anywhere in between, one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is: fiberglass or gunite?

Let’s Clear the Air: Fiberglass Isn’t Always Cheaper

There’s a common misconception floating around that fiberglass pools are a more affordable option. I’ve had this conversation with several homeowners lately, and while fiberglass pools do install faster and require less maintenance over time, the upfront cost isn't always lower.

What many folks don’t consider is the shipping cost. Fiberglass pools are prefabricated and transported in one large piece—and I’m talking big-rig sized. Depending on the size of the shell and how far it’s coming from, shipping alone can cost anywhere from $7,000 to $13,000. By the time you factor that in, the total investment starts to look a lot like that of a custom gunite pool.

Why Some Homeowners Choose Gunite

Gunite pools are poured in place, meaning they’re completely customizable to your space and design vision. If you're dreaming of a pool that wraps around a party porch, includes a sun shelf, or has a deep end made for diving, gunite gives you more creative freedom. It also blends beautifully with high-end custom homes, like many we see on Ono Island and in luxury communities across the Gulf Coast.

The tradeoff is time—gunite takes longer to construct. But for many of my clients, that extra time is worth it for a pool that feels architecturally tailored to the home and landscape.

Fiberglass Pools Have Their Place

That said, fiberglass pools are a great solution for certain buyers. They’re quick to install, offer a smooth finish that’s gentle on bare feet, and come in a variety of pre-set shapes. If you're not looking for extensive customization, fiberglass can absolutely work for coastal living—especially in backyards where access allows for crane delivery.

But again, keep the shipping costs in mind. A beautiful, simple fiberglass pool could still end up costing the same—or more—than a custom gunite installation once all expenses are added up.

A Pool Builder I Trust: Kaiser Pools

When it comes to pool construction in Baldwin County, Kaiser Pools is a name I recommend. They’re based right here locally and have built an excellent reputation for both quality craftsmanship and honest communication. Whether you’re still dreaming or ready to dive into construction, I suggest starting with a consultation to compare options side-by-side.
