Shoalwater Drive on Ono Island
Live oaks draped in Spanish moss. Deep, private lots. Bayou St. John big water on one side and canal-front homes on the other. This is one of my favorite streets on the island.
If you asked me to show you the heart of Ono Island, I would take you down Shoalwater Drive.
Shoalwater sits right in the center of the island, near the water tower, Dolphin Drive, and River Road. The moment I turn onto it, the pace slows. The road narrows into a quiet, winding lane with no curbs and no center line, just soft edges of grass, sand, and pine straw. The live oaks lean in overhead, Spanish moss hangs from their branches, and the sunlight comes through in patches.
What makes this street so special to me is what sits on either side of it. To the north, homes back up to the big water of Bayou St. John. To the south, homes open onto the canals. One street gives buyers two very different ways to live on the water on Ono Island.

On the north side, homes sit on Bayou St. John. That is big water: wide views, open sky, and the kind of sunsets that stop a conversation. Buyers who dream of looking out over open water usually start here. I keep my big-water homes and land guide close for exactly this conversation.
On the south side, homes open onto the canals. Canal living feels more tucked in and protected, with the boat close to the back door and calmer water to come and go on. A street that still feels like the island
The oak canopy
Mature live oaks are the soul of Shoalwater. In long stretches, their branches meet over the road and form a shaded tunnel of green. Tall pines rise between them, and wooded lots of pine and palmetto sit between many of the homes. That natural buffer is a big part of why this street feels so private.
Homes set back from the road
The homes on Shoalwater sit far back on generous lots, and no two look alike. I pass raised Gulf Coast homes in soft blue, pale yellow, sage, and grey with white trim, metal roofs, balconies, and stairs up to covered front porches. There is a classic white two-story with dormers and a steep dark roof, a cream stucco Mediterranean with an arched entry, and crisp white modern homes with low rooflines and walls of glass.
Driveways with character
I love noticing the driveways on this street. Some are crushed shell circles that crunch under the tires. Others are red brick pavers, grey pavers, stamped or exposed-aggregate concrete. One circular drive holds a massive Canary Island date palm in its center island. Another entrance is lined with four tall sabal palms behind a low white wall.
Landscaping that ranges from wild to polished
Sabal palms, sago palms, and low palmettos grow everywhere. Some owners let the native coastal scrub stay natural. Others keep smooth green lawns, rounded hedges, ferns, and tropical beds. I spot a big magnolia, a flowering crepe myrtle, and an American flag flying high in one front yard. The mix is part of the charm.

Right in the center of the island
Shoalwater is easy to find once you know the island. It sits in the middle of Ono, near the water tower, Dolphin Drive, and River Road.
Being in the center means you are never far from either end of the island. It also means the street feels settled and quiet, away from the busier stretches near the entrance. For buyers who want a true island feel, that central spot matters.
