A card room members call “The Mahjong Room,” the click of tiles on a Monday afternoon — and just one of the many clubs you can join when you live on Ono Island.

When a buyer asks me what life on Ono Island is like once the boat is tied up, I tell them this: you can be as social as you want here.

I have advised buyers on Ono Island full-time for years, and the question behind the question is almost always the same. Will I find my people? The water brings people here. The clubs are a big part of what makes it feel like home.

The Ono Island Mahjong Club is a lovely example. It is not the only club on the island — far from it — but it captures the rhythm of island life beautifully: a standing table, familiar faces, and an afternoon that has nothing to do with a to-do list.

Where and when do they play?

The club meets in the card room at the HCC, which members like to call “The Mahjong Room.” They play on Monday and Tuesday afternoons and again on Tuesday evenings.

The HCC

The HCC is Ono Island’s gathering place — where island meetings, community events, and so many of the clubs come together. If you are new to the island, it is where you will start seeing familiar faces.

What is mahjong, anyway?

Mahjong is a tile game that began in China and found its way to America in the 1920s. It is usually played by four people around a square table. Players draw and discard tiles, working to build a winning hand — a little like rummy, but with beautiful carved tiles instead of cards.

There are several styles of the game played around the world. In American mahjong, the winning hands change each year and are printed on a card, so there is always something new to learn. It is part strategy, part luck, and a great deal of conversation.

What other clubs are there on Ono Island?
