Today, it stands as part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, nestled within what is now Naval Air Station Pensacola.

The elevated position of Fort Barrancas gave soldiers a clear sightline to support and command the entire bay entrance. It’s no coincidence that today, the Naval Air Station Pensacola, the cradle of naval aviation, sits just steps away from this historic site. Even now, the skies above are filled with the roar of the Blue Angels, who often practice overhead—a proud reminder of the area’s continuing military legacy.

Travel west, and you’re in my hometown of Orange Beach, Alabama—where sugar-white sands meet a thriving community that I feel blessed to call home.
