Canal Road Bridge Closure Over the Intracoastal Waterway in Orange Beach, Alabama: What You Need to Know

By Meredith Amon, Licensed in Alabama and Florida

The Canal Road Bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in Orange Beach, Alabama, will be closed to marine traffic from August 11 through August 15, 2025 due to ongoing bridge construction. As a local real estate advisor and someone who lives and works here, I want to help keep you informed—especially if you're a boater, waterfront homeowner, or someone who enjoys the beautiful waters around Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and Ono Island.

Orange Beach Alabama Canal Bridge ICW Amon

Why the Closure Is Happening

The bridge construction is part of a major infrastructure project to widen and modernize Canal Road (also known as Alabama State Route 180). The bridge is being improved to help alleviate traffic congestion and accommodate the increasing number of vehicles traveling between Foley and the beaches of Orange Beach and Perdido Key.

But during this phase of construction, the Intracoastal Waterway will be completely closed to marine traffic from Monday, August 11 through Friday, August 15. This includes all boaters—whether you're traveling from Terry Cove, Bear Point, or heading west toward The Wharf or Bon Secour.

What This Means for Boaters and Waterfront Property Owners

If you live on Ono Island, in Bear Point, Terry Cove, or own property with direct Intracoastal access, this will affect your ability to pass under the bridge. Whether you're planning a fishing trip, a day at Robinson Island, or just navigating the back bays, you’ll want to plan ahead.

As someone who frequently hears from neighbors and friends navigating this stretch of water, I know this temporary closure will require a little patience—but the long-term improvements will benefit us all. The upgraded bridge is expected to increase safety and traffic flow, not just for cars, but also for vessels once fully complete.

My Local Tip

If you're currently looking at homes with boating access, or you’re a waterfront homeowner who relies on this route, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m happy to share detour options, neighborhood-specific boating advice, and which areas are least affected during the construction period. Local knowledge can make a huge difference during times like this—and that’s exactly what I’m here for.

You can also check in with the U.S. Coast Guard and Alabama Department of Transportation for the most up-to-date notices to mariners during construction.
