The 4th Annual Charter Boat Billfish Tournament Weigh-In at Zeke’s Landing

Last night was not an ordinary evening at the marina. It was the public weigh-in for the 4th Annual Charter Boat Billfish Tournament at Mo Fishin Bar. Tuna on the scale. I love going to fishing tournament weigh-ins. It is such an awesome way to bring the Orange Beach community together. Last night was one of those nights, and it was a special one.

The 4th Annual Charter Boat Billfish Tournament ran August 26 through 28. Licensed charter boats only. The public weigh-in was Friday, August 28, at Mo Fishin Bar at Zeke’s Landing. The fleet had been offshore since Wednesday. By late afternoon they were coming home under the Perdido Pass Bridge, and Mo Fishin Bar had that particular kind of crowd: salt still on people’s skin, kids on the concrete, captains watching the hoist, neighbors who simply wanted to be there for the tournament.

I took my camera. I wanted you to see what I saw.

The tuna hit the scale in that hard Gulf light.

The hoist outside Mo Fishin Bar is a tall white frame with the marina name running down the beam. Last night a tuna hung from it tail-first, silver and dark, still wet, turning slowly while someone worked the control box. You could hear the pulley. You could smell diesel, ice, and the clean mineral scent of a fish that had just left the Gulf.

A woman in a blue tournament shirt stood with a clipboard and wrote. The board behind her waited for boat names: billfish, tuna, dolphin, wahoo, swordfish. A man in a High Cotton shirt watched with his hands on his hips. Someone in the crowd lifted a phone. Two young fishermen posed between a pair of tuna, grinning the way you grin when the day actually paid you back.

It was awesome to see them weighing in the tuna, the dolphin, and the wahoo. The sky was that bright, almost white-blue we get in late August, with a few thin clouds sitting over the trees. Pink flowers at the edge of the pad. The Zeke’s Marina sign. The sponsor banner thanking the people who keep this tournament going. None of it felt like a show put on for visitors. It felt like Orange Beach showing up for its charter fleet on tournament night.

These were some of the boats I saw come home.

Zeke’s is home to the Gulf’s largest charter fleet. Last night I was not looking at a list. I was looking at hulls I know, names I have watched leave Cotton Bayou for years.

Around the corner, the night changed keys.

The scale was still working when I walked around the corner. The Zeke’s marquee was already lit, those big white letters outlined in warm bulbs against the grass and the dark. In the distance the stage threw blue light into the palms. You could hear it before you saw it: a guitar, and a voice I already knew.

Rhonda is one of my favorite musicians on this coast, and a very good friend. Last night she stood center stage in a sleeveless red dress that held every bit of the spotlight. Dark hair. Guitar in her hands. A necklace catching the light when she leaned into the microphone.

A blue sail stretched over the stage. Palms stood up behind the lights. There was a warm orange wash on the floor and a cooler blue in the cables. It was not polished in a studio way. It was live, slightly messy, completely right: the Gulf night, the heat still sitting in the air, and a woman who can make a patio go quiet without asking it to.

Her voice did not chirp. It carried. Clear, sure, a little husky at the edges, the kind of singing that belongs outside with salt in the air. The weigh-in was the reason we were all there. Rhonda was the gift around the corner. When she starts, I stop walking.

This is the part of the house I want you to buy.

I also want them to understand nights like this tournament: the charter fleet on the scale at Mo Fishin Bar, the Tiki Bar around the corner, the people who live here showing up for one another. This is not every Friday at Zeke’s. This was the 4th Annual Charter Boat Billfish Tournament.
