Baldwin County Alabama Property Taxes Orange Beach Senior Citizens

One of the most common questions I hearhere on the Gulf Coast is: “Do senior citizens pay property taxes in Alabama?” This is an important topic, especially for those retiring or relocating to Orange Beach, Ono Island, or other communities across Baldwin County. The good news is Alabama offers meaningful property tax relief for seniors, but the details can vary depending on income, age, and whether the property is your primary residence.

Property Tax Relief for Seniors in Baldwin County

Here’s how it works for seniors living in Baldwin County, Alabama:

  • Exempt from State Property Taxes
If you are 65 or older, you are automatically exempt from paying state property taxes on your primary residence (the home you live in full time).

  • County and Local Taxes Still Apply
Seniors may still owe Baldwin County and Orange Beach city property taxes, unless they qualify for an additional exemption. These amounts tend to be relatively modest compared to many other coastal states, but they should still be factored into your budget.

  • Income-Based Exemptions
If your annual taxable income is $12,000 or less, you are exempt from all property taxes—state, county, and municipal—on your principal residence.

  • Disability Exemptions
Homeowners who are permanently and totally disabled, regardless of age, qualify for the same exemptions as seniors.

Why This Matters in Orange Beach and Ono Island

Many people move to Orange Beach and Ono Island to enjoy retirement, second homes, or downsizing into a more manageable coastal property. Property taxes here are significantly lower than in many other waterfront communities across the country, and these senior exemptions only add to the appeal.

For example, when I work with buyers looking at waterfront homes in Orange Beach or custom homesites on Ono Island, property taxes are often one of the first questions they ask. Knowing that seniors benefit from exemptions on their state property taxes—and in some cases, from all property taxes—provides peace of mind and can help shape decisions about where and what to buy.

Planning for Retirement on the Gulf Coast

As a real estate advisor on Ono Island and in Orange Beach, I always recommend:

  • Checking with the Baldwin County Revenue Commissioner’s Office for the latest exemptions and filing requirements.

  • Considering how property taxes fit into your long-term retirement planning.

  • Evaluating the resale value and affordability of homes in areas like Ono Island, Gulf Shores, and Orange Beach, where exemptions can add significant long-term savings.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a senior homeowner—or planning to retire on the Alabama Gulf Coast—understanding property taxes is an important step. Alabama already offers some of the lowest property taxes in the country, and Baldwin County’s exemptions for seniors make living in Orange Beach and Ono Island even more attractive.
