Golf carts have become part of the coastal lifestyle in Orange Beach, especially in established residential neighborhoods where the streets are quieter and everyday destinations are nearby. However, owning a golf cart does not automatically mean it can be driven anywhere in Orange Beach—or from every home to the beach.

Orange Beach: Golf carts may be operated only when properly inspected, insured and permitted by the City of Orange Beach. They may travel only on streets officially designated for golf-cart use.
Ono Island: Golf carts are commonly used within the private gated community, subject to current Ono Island Property Owners Association and security rules. They are primarily intended for travel within the island.
Beach access: A golf cart may be used to reach a beach-access area only when the entire route is legal. Golf carts cannot be driven along major state highways, on sidewalks, on the Backcountry Trail or onto the Gulf beach.
Are Golf Carts Legal in Orange Beach, Alabama?
Yes. Golf carts are legal within the City of Orange Beach when the cart and driver meet the city’s requirements.
A golf cart operated within the city must generally:
- Be inspected and permitted by the Orange Beach Police Department
- Display the required city permit decals
- Be covered by liability insurance
- Be operated by someone with a valid driver’s license
- Contain all required safety equipment
- Remain on a city-designated golf-cart street
- Follow the posted speed limit and other traffic laws
A golf cart is not automatically permitted throughout Orange Beach simply because it has headlights, turn signals or an Alabama license plate. The specific street and route still matter.
Does an Orange Beach Golf Cart Need a Permit?
Yes. Golf carts operated within the corporate limits of Orange Beach must be inspected, permitted and identified with the appropriate city decals.
The city currently uses a four-year inspection and permit cycle. Fees and procedures can change, so owners should confirm the current amount and inspection schedule directly with the Orange Beach Police Department.

A permitted golf cart must obey the posted speed limit on the street where it is traveling. The cart must also be designed for a maximum speed of no more than 25 miles per hour.
Orange Beach cannot designate a street for golf-cart use when the posted roadway speed limit exceeds 25 miles per hour. In practical terms, golf carts are limited to approved streets with posted limits of 25 miles per hour or less.
Some residential streets may have lower posted limits. Drivers must always follow the lower posted speed.
Which Orange Beach Roads Prohibit Golf Carts?
The three major arterial roads through Orange Beach are not golf-cart streets:
- State Highway 180: Canal Road
- State Highway 182: Perdido Beach Boulevard
- State Highway 161: Orange Beach Boulevard
Golf carts are also prohibited on any public road that has not been officially designated for golf-cart operation.
Other Prohibited Areas
- Public sidewalks
- Bicycle paths
- The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail
- The sand or Gulf beach
- Roads with posted speed limits above 25 miles per hour

Can a Golf Cart Cross Canal Road or Perdido Beach Boulevard?
Buyers should not assume that a golf cart may cross a prohibited highway simply because it would only be on the roadway for a few moments.
Unless a particular crossing has been expressly authorized and marked by the city, I would not plan a golf-cart route that requires traveling across Canal Road, Perdido Beach Boulevard or Orange Beach Boulevard.

A home may appear geographically close to the Gulf while still lacking a continuous legal golf-cart route to the beach. A map showing a short distance does not necessarily show highway restrictions, sidewalks, private roads or prohibited crossings.
Can You Take a Golf Cart to the Beach From Your Orange Beach Home?
Sometimes—but only when the entire route is legal.
You may be able to take a golf cart near a public beach access when:
- Your home is connected to the destination entirely by designated golf-cart streets.
- The route does not require traveling along or crossing a prohibited highway.
- Golf-cart parking is permitted at the destination.
- The cart is properly inspected, permitted and insured.
- Your subdivision, condominium or homeowners association allows golf carts.
- You have an approved place to park and charge the cart.
A golf cart cannot be driven onto the sand. A driver also cannot use a sidewalk, bicycle path or the Backcountry Trail as a way to bypass a prohibited roadway.
For many Orange Beach properties north of Perdido Beach Boulevard, the highway creates a legal barrier between the neighborhood and the Gulf. In those locations, a cart may still be useful for visiting neighbors, traveling to a marina or reaching community amenities, but it may not provide legal transportation to the beach.

What Other Orange Beach Golf-Cart Rules Apply?
Golf-cart operators must follow the same basic roadway rules that apply to other drivers. Orange Beach also imposes several cart-specific requirements.
- Only a person with a valid driver’s license may operate the cart.
- All passengers must remain seated.
- Occupancy cannot exceed the cart’s designed seating capacity.
- Carts cannot travel two abreast in a single lane.
- A cart cannot pass another vehicle within the same lane.
- A driver cannot weave between lanes or rows of traffic.
- Golf-cart operators must yield appropriately to overtaking vehicles.
- Alcohol and drug-impaired driving laws apply.
- Accessible parking spaces require a valid disability-parking permit.
- The cart must not be operated recklessly or in an unsafe manner.
Violations may result in fines and the suspension or revocation of the city golf-cart permit.
Are Rental Golf Carts Permitted in Orange Beach?
Rental golf carts may be operated when the rental company, driver and cart comply with city regulations.
A rental cart must be properly permitted and identified. It may also be required to display the rental company’s information, a rental-equipment flag and a notice explaining that the cart cannot be driven on roads with speed limits above 25 miles per hour or by an unlicensed driver.
Renting a cart advertised as “street legal” does not give the renter unrestricted access throughout Orange Beach. The approved-street rules still apply.
Are Golf Carts Allowed on Ono Island?
Yes. Golf carts are commonly used within the private residential community of Ono Island.
Ono Island is located in unincorporated Baldwin County and is not within the corporate limits of the City of Orange Beach. The bridge, gate and internal road system are privately controlled by the Ono Island Property Owners Association.
The Orange Beach city decal is therefore not what authorizes golf-cart use on Ono Island’s private roads. Owners should confirm the current private-community rules with the Ono Island POA or island security.

Where Can You Drive a Golf Cart on Ono Island?
A golf cart should primarily be viewed as an on-island vehicle.
Residents commonly use golf carts for:
- Visiting neighbors
- Traveling to community recreation facilities
- Reaching island green spaces
- Going to the private boat launch
- Carrying boating supplies to a nearby dock
- Enjoying a leisurely ride through the community
- Participating in approved neighborhood events
Drivers should observe every posted speed limit and stop sign while remaining attentive to walkers, cyclists, children, pets, contractors and full-size vehicles.
Can You Drive a Golf Cart From Ono Island to the Beach?
There is no practical legal golf-cart route connecting Ono Island to the Gulf beach.
The island bridge exits toward Perdido Beach Boulevard, also known as State Highway 182. Perdido Beach Boulevard is not an approved Orange Beach golf-cart street and carries a speed limit above the allowable threshold.
A golf cart should not be driven onto Perdido Beach Boulevard to reach a public beach access.
An Ono Island homeowner wishing to use a golf cart at a separate beach property would generally need to transport it by trailer and then comply with the rules governing that location.
Best Orange Beach Locations for Owning a Golf Cart
Bear Point and East Orange Beach
Bear Point has one of the most recognizable golf-cart cultures in Orange Beach. Several internal residential roads are included on the city’s designated-street list.
A cart can be convenient for neighborhood visits, boating access and local community activities. However, it should not be viewed as transportation from Bear Point to the Gulf beach.
Terry Cove and Marina Neighborhoods
Terry Cove Drive, Safeharbor Drive, Cotton Bayou Drive, Cotton Bayou Lane, Lauder Lane, Sailfish Lane and several nearby roads are designated.
These areas may work well for buyers who want a cart for short marina trips, neighborhood visits and destinations reachable without using a major highway.
Oak Ridge and Easy Street Area
West Oak Ridge Drive, East Oakridge Drive, Easy Street and several surrounding residential streets appear on the designated list.
A golf cart can work well when the property and intended destinations are connected within the same approved-road network.
Windward Lakes and Nearby Communities
Several private communities contain internal streets designated for golf-cart use.
Buyers should still review condominium or HOA rules, assigned-parking restrictions, charging policies and the legal route beyond the community entrance.
Ono Island
Ono Island is one of the most enjoyable places to own a cart for travel within a large private residential community.
The appeal is neighborhood convenience rather than transportation to the public beach. A dedicated garage bay or covered cart-storage area can be especially useful.
What Should Orange Beach Condo Buyers Verify?
A city golf-cart permit does not override the rules of a condominium, subdivision or homeowners association.

- Does a golf cart count as one of the unit’s allotted vehicles?
- Is there an assigned or deeded parking space?
- May a cart be parked in the garage?

- Does the garage have sufficient height and width clearance?
- Is there a continuous legal route to the intended destination?
- Is golf-cart parking available at the marina, restaurant or beach access?
This is particularly important for investment properties. A listing may be described as “golf-cart friendly,” but that phrase does not necessarily mean there is a legal golf-cart route to the beach or a guaranteed place to store one.

- Does the route require crossing a state highway?
- Does the association permit golf carts?
- Is there assigned, deeded or private parking?
- Can the cart be charged safely and legally?
- Is the beach access actually reachable by an approved route?
- Will the cart be useful for the buyer’s lifestyle?
A property located one mile from the Gulf may have no legal cart route to the beach, while another property farther away may offer an excellent internal neighborhood network. The value is often found in the details that do not appear in an MLS description.
