Gulf Coast Christmas

One of my favorite parts of working with out-of-state buyers is how often they ask about the little traditions that make December feel like the Gulf Coast. The food is a big part of it, especially in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. It’s not just “what’s for dinner,” it’s what you can order, what you can prep ahead, and what locals still treat as non-negotiable when the calendar flips into holiday mode.

“Christmas on the coast tastes like something simmering, something briny, and something buttery, served whenever everyone finally gets in the door.”

That’s the rhythm I hear from neighbors and homeowners year after year.

Traditions On The Gulf Coast

If you’re coming in from out of state, these are some of the most common “Gulf Coast Christmas” traditions people ask me to explain, help plan, or help source through local restaurants, seafood markets, and caterers.

1) Christmas Eve gumbo or seafood stew

A lot of homes lean into a big pot on Christmas Eve, something that can hold warm on the stove and feed a crowd in waves. Gumbo shows up often, and oyster stew is another coastal classic that feels festive without being fussy.

2) Oysters in some form, usually more than one

Out-of-state buyers always ask about oyster season, how locals serve them, and where to get the “best ones.” The honest answer is that it depends on the vibe you want, raw bar, baked, chargrilled style, or folded into dressing.

3) Oyster dressing, cornbread dressing, and the “one pan everyone fights over”

Dressing is a point of pride along the coast. Some go cornbread-forward, some go more herby and bread-forward, and some add local sausage for a deeper, smoky note that just works with oysters.

4) Shrimp trays, smoked dips, and easy appetizers that disappear fast

Many visitors are surprised by how often the “big meal” is supported by snackable Gulf staples, chilled shrimp, warm seafood dip, and baked oysters being the usual headliners.

5) A dessert table that leans Southern, plus something citrusy

You’ll see pecan desserts and praline-style sweets often, and I love a bright citrus finish after richer seafood and butter-based sides. It feels very coastal and very December.

How I help out-of-state buyers make it easy

If you’re arriving for the holidays and want to keep it simple, I can point you in the right direction for restaurant reservations, catering, or pickup-friendly seafood spreads. A few dependable local starting points people ask about include:

  • Seafood market catering for Gulf fish, shrimp, and party-ready platters (for example, Lartigue’s in Orange Beach notes holiday catering and pickup options).
  • Full-service catering when you want setup and a complete menu (Alabama Coastal Catering serves the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area; Naman’s Catering is another long-running Gulf Coast caterer).
  • Restaurant catering and private parties if you want familiar coastal favorites without cooking (Sassy Bass advertises catering and private party options).
  • Casual coastal staples when you want a straightforward Gulf Coast meal out while you’re in town (Tacky Jacks lists Orange Beach and Gulf Shores locations and publishes current contact details).

“If you tell me the date you arrive and what you want to serve, I can usually get you a plan that feels like a local tradition, not a logistics project.”

If this helped, drop me a quick note and tell me what you’re planning to cook or order. I’ll point you toward a few Gulf Coast favorites, and if you’re also exploring property while you’re here, you can browse listings anytime on www.searchthegulf.com.
