Best Fishing Spots Around Ono Island
One of the things I love most about living on Ono Island is the strong boating and fishing community. Many of my neighbors and friends are experienced anglers who have shared their best fishing spots, techniques, and insider tips with me over the years. Whether you're interested in inshore fishing, nearshore reefs, or deep-sea adventures, these are the places they say consistently produce great catches.
Fishing is a way of life on Ono Island, and over the years, my neighbors and friends have shared their best fishing tips, favorite spots, and must-know advice for making the most of the waters around our island. Whether you’re casting a line inshore, heading offshore for deep-sea fishing, or simply looking for the best local resources, these recommendations come straight from those who know these waters best.
Inshore Favorites: Calm Waters, Big Catches
For a relaxed day on the water, my neighbors swear by Ole River and Perdido Bay. These spots are prime territory for speckled trout, redfish, and flounder, and if you fish around the docks and grass beds, you’re bound to have some luck.
Another spot that consistently comes up in conversation is Terry Cove and Bayou St. John—locals say this is where you’ll find black drum, redfish, and sheepshead. And, of course, the Perdido Pass Jetties and Bridge are famous for red drum, pompano, and Spanish mackerel, especially when the tide is moving.
Nearshore Fishing: Just Outside Perdido Pass
Several of my neighbors like to head just beyond Perdido Pass to fish Alabama Point and the nearshore reefs. These areas are great for king and Spanish mackerel, red drum, and bluefish. One friend mentioned it’s the perfect place for a quick trip if you don’t want to go too far offshore.
For those who prefer fishing from shore, the Gulf State Park Pier is a well-known spot where you can catch pompano, sheepshead, and whiting. It’s a great alternative if you don’t have a boat but still want to get in on the action.
Offshore Adventures: Where the Pros Go
If you’re serious about offshore fishing, my neighbors with sportfishing boats often head 20-60 miles out to chase tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, and marlin at The Edge and The Nipple. Deep-dropping is another technique gaining popularity, especially at Alabama Alps & Rock Bottom, where anglers bring in red snapper, grouper, and amberjack.
For those willing to make the long run offshore, the Trysler Grounds and The Elbow are two deep-water fishing spots where locals catch snapper, grouper, and tilefish. These areas require more time on the water, but I’ve heard the results are worth it.
Boating Services & Marine Maintenance on Ono Island
Owning a boat here means staying ahead on maintenance, and many of my neighbors recommend booking marine services well in advance, especially during peak season when technicians are in high demand.

Where to Get Ice & Fuel for a Fishing Trip
Before heading out on the water, my neighbors always make sure to stop for fuel and ice at Oso at Bear Point, which offers after-hours ice and fuel services. Their self-service ice machine dispenses 20 lb bags, and credit cards are accepted, making it a convenient stop for early morning trips.
