Ono Island–Style Fried Goat Cheese Rounds: 10 Ways to Crisp, Coat, and Serve Them
I love a salad that feels like a full meal and a chicken dish that tastes like it came off a dockside menu. One of my favorite “secret weapons” is fried goat cheese — crisp on the outside, creamy in the middle, and instantly elevates everything from citrus salads to grilled chicken. If you’re building your Ono Island entertaining repertoire, these are easy, reliable, and very “Ono Island style”.
“If you can make one topping that turns a simple salad into a showpiece, it’s a crisp goat cheese round with something bright and salty nearby.”
My Go-To Method: How I Shape Goat Cheese for Frying (So It Doesn’t Melt Away)
Step 1: Choose the right goat cheese
- Use a goat cheese log (not whipped). Cold is your friend.
- Freeze the log for 15–25 minutes before slicing so it stays neat.
Step 2: Slice and shape
- Slice into 1/2-inch rounds. (Thinner melts too fast.)
- Gently press edges to “tighten” the round.
- Chill again for 10 minutes while you prep coatings.
Step 3: Standard dredge (the “it always works” setup)
- Flour (seasoned with salt + pepper)
- Egg wash (1 egg + splash of water)
- Coating (breadcrumbs/nuts/herbs as listed below)
Step 4: Pan-fry or shallow-fry
- Use a skillet with 1/4-inch oil (neutral oil).
- Medium heat. Fry 45–75 seconds per side, just until golden.
- Drain on a rack. Serve right away.
Pro tip: If you want the most “restaurant” result, double-coat (egg + crumbs twice) and keep rounds cold until the moment they hit the pan.
