For homeowners who enjoy offshore fishing but also want a comfortable boat for cruising, island hopping and family days on the water, the Insetta 35IFC can be an exciting choice. It is important, however, to match this boat to the right canal property. With its 10-foot-8-inch beam, substantial operating weight and overall size, an Insetta is better suited to one of Ono Island’s larger canals. It may not be a comfortable or practical fit for a smaller or narrower canal—particularly where opposing docks, tight turning areas or limited water depth restrict the approach.

The Internal Foil System

The “IFC” in Insetta 35IFC refers to its Internal Foiling System. Fixed foils are positioned within the tunnel between the two hulls, where they generate lift as the boat gains speed.

The system contributes to cruising efficiency, acceleration, handling and stability while helping the boat produce a smoother, drier ride in choppy water. Because the foils are fixed and contain no moving parts, the captain does not have anything additional to deploy or adjust while underway.

That design is particularly interesting for an Ono Island boating day that may begin in calm canal water, continue across busier sections of Bayou St. John or the Intracoastal Waterway and eventually move through Perdido Pass into open Gulf conditions.

It is a boat designed to handle the entire transition—from dock to Gulf and back home again.

Its offshore-oriented layout can include the equipment and storage needed for longer fishing days while still allowing the boat to serve as a comfortable platform for family outings.

For the homeowner who enjoys serious fishing but also wants a boat the family can use comfortably, the Insetta brings those two worlds together exceptionally well.

Looking Beyond the Published Draft

I look at the entire route and the complete dockside setup:

  • Water depth beneath the boat and engines
  • Typical water levels during changing winds and tides
  • Depth at the dock and near the canal entrance
  • Canal width and turning room
  • Neighboring docks, lifts and pilings
  • The orientation of the slip
  • Afternoon crosswinds
  • The boat’s fully loaded weight
  • Hardtop and boathouse-roof clearance
  • The full departure and return sequence

This is part of what I call the Ono Island Dock-to-Gulf Test . A boat may fit inside a slip on paper and still feel difficult to manage during an afternoon return with wind, current and neighboring boats in the equation.

Best Suited to a Larger Ono Island Canal

The Insetta 35IFC is not likely to be the ideal boat for every canal property on Ono Island.

A larger canal with adequate depth, a broad navigable channel and comfortable turning space can create a very different experience from a narrow canal with docks projecting from both shorelines. The boat’s 10-foot-8-inch beam is one of its greatest advantages offshore, but that same beam requires additional room at the dock and along the approach.

A smaller canal may present challenges such as:

  • Limited turning radius
  • Reduced clearance between opposing docks
  • Less room to correct for wind
  • Shallower areas near the shoreline
  • Difficulty maneuvering around neighboring lifts
  • Insufficient slip or piling width
  • Restrictions on boathouse size or waterward projection
  • A more complicated return-trip sequence
My local perspective I would evaluate the property and boat as one complete boating system. A larger canal can allow the Insetta to feel comfortable and natural. A smaller canal may make the same boat feel oversized, even if it can technically reach the dock.

The Best Slip and Lift Setup for an Insetta 35IFC

For a boat of this size, I prefer a slip that provides comfortable working clearance rather than a narrowly measured fit. Every installation should be designed around the actual boat, its options, the property and the canal conditions.

01 — SLIP WIDTH

Approximately 14 to 15 Feet of Clear Width

With a 10-foot-8-inch beam, the boat needs room for lift hardware, guides, rub rails, fenders and natural movement. A clear slip width of approximately 14 to 15 feet may provide a comfortable starting point, subject to the final lift design.

02 — SLIP LENGTH

Approximately 40 Feet or More

Additional length allows room for the bow, outboards, walkways, lift structure and line handling. The engines should not feel crowded against a bulkhead, rear piling or dock structure.

03 — APPROACH

A Straight, Uncomplicated Entry

The best arrangement gives the captain enough distance to align the boat before reaching the pilings. A sharp turn immediately before the slip can become difficult when a crosswind moves across the canal.

04 — WALKWAYS

Full-Length Side Access

Walkways along both sides can make boarding, unloading, line handling and washdown much easier. A broad finger pier also creates a safer place for passengers and equipment during departure and return.

Calculate the Boat’s Real Operating Weight

The Insetta’s dry weight with engines is approximately 12,000 pounds, but a lift should never be selected using dry weight alone.

A fully equipped boat may also carry:

  • As much as 516 gallons of fuel
  • Fresh water and batteries
  • Electronics and safety equipment
  • Anchors and ground tackle
  • Fishing equipment, ice and provisions
  • Trolling motor and outriggers
  • Additional seating and installed options
  • Personal items normally kept aboard

Fuel alone can add several thousand pounds. Once equipment and normal operating supplies are included, the real lifting weight becomes considerably greater than the dry specification.

A practical starting point For an Insetta 35IFC, I would begin the conversation with a properly engineered catamaran lift in approximately the 20,000- to 24,000-pound class. Depending on the engines, options and normal fuel load, the higher capacity may provide a more appropriate operating margin. Final capacity should be determined by qualified marine professionals using the actual boat and its normal loaded condition.

A Catamaran-Specific Bunk Arrangement

A catamaran should not be placed on bunks configured for a traditional monohull. The lift must support the Insetta’s two sponsons at the correct locations and distribute the weight according to the boat and lift manufacturers’ requirements.

The setup may include:

  • Independently positioned bunks for each sponson
  • Structural cross members designed for the loaded weight
  • Guides that help center both hulls
  • Clearance for the tunnel and internal foil system
  • Clearance for transducers and underwater hardware
  • Saltwater-resistant cables, beams and components

The boat should settle naturally into its proper position. A heavily loaded catamaran should not require people to push, pull or manually force it into alignment.

Four-Post or Elevator Lift?

A four-post lift can be a strong option when there is adequate piling placement, slip width and water depth. It offers excellent stability and can be configured with catamaran-specific bunks.

An elevator-style lift may also work where the shoreline, bulkhead or existing dock layout favors that configuration. The structure, weight distribution and side loading must be carefully engineered.

I would not assume that an existing monohull lift can be converted simply by moving its bunks. The beams, cables, motors, pilings, structural capacity and weight distribution all need to be evaluated together.

Boathouse Height and Roof Clearance

Vertical fit is just as important as slip width. The Insetta’s hardtop, antennas, radar, outriggers and any optional tower can affect whether it will fit beneath an existing boathouse roof.

The boat may clear the roof while floating but become too tall as the lift raises it to the desired storage position. Before purchasing the boat or property, I would measure:

  • Waterline to the top of the hardtop
  • Waterline to the top of the radar
  • Height of folded and raised antennas
  • Outrigger height and storage position
  • Maximum lift travel
  • Underside of the roof framing
  • Clearance during unusually high water
  • Height needed to store the hulls above normal water exposure

If a second-station tower is being considered, the boathouse design becomes an even more significant part of the decision.

Power, Water and Dockside Support

A boat designed for long offshore days deserves a dock that supports the return trip. The most enjoyable arrangements make it easy to unload and care for the boat without creating unnecessary steps.

  • Convenient freshwater washdown
  • Appropriate dockside electrical service
  • Shore-power connection when applicable
  • Thoughtfully positioned dock lighting
  • Lighting beneath the boathouse
  • Secure equipment storage
  • Easy access for coolers and fishing gear
  • A hose that reaches the entire boat
  • Safe, non-slip boarding surfaces
  • Well-positioned cleats for arrival and temporary tie-up

I especially appreciate a dock where the boat can be unloaded before it is raised. When wet gear, coolers and fishing equipment have a natural place to go, the end of the boating day feels much more organized.

The Importance of a Dock Trial

A sea trial tells us how the Insetta performs on the water. A dock trial tells us how well it fits a particular Ono Island property.

Whenever practical, I would want to bring the boat—or a boat with nearly identical dimensions—to the property and test the complete sequence:

  1. Enter the canal and observe the navigable channel.
  2. Approach the property from the normal direction of travel.
  3. Turn in front of the dock and evaluate the available radius.
  4. Align the boat with the slip.
  5. Enter between the pilings without forcing the approach.
  6. Check clearance around the hulls, hardware and engines.
  7. Consider how wind and current affect the boat.
  8. Confirm the lift, bunk and roof dimensions.
  9. Back away from the dock and complete the turn.
  10. Make the return trip toward larger water.

This is often where small but important details become apparent. A piling may be positioned where the captain needs the stern to swing. A neighboring dock may reduce the turning radius. An afternoon crosswind may make one approach direction easier than another.

Those observations help determine whether the setup will be enjoyable on an ordinary day—not merely possible under perfect conditions.

Match the Boat to the Complete Waterfront Property

I see the Insetta 35IFC as a compelling option for an Ono Island homeowner who wants genuine offshore capability without giving up stability, comfort or family versatility.

Its catamaran platform, internal-foil technology, large fuel capacity, open deck and fishing amenities make it especially attractive to owners who envision longer trips beyond Perdido Pass. It is the kind of boat that can extend an owner’s Ono Island boating radius while remaining enjoyable for an afternoon close to home.

I would focus the property search on one of the island’s larger canals with adequate depth, generous turning room and sufficient separation between docks. This may not be the right boat for a smaller canal where width, depth and maneuverability are limited.

Will this Insetta fit this canal, this approach, this slip, this lift and this boathouse—and will the entire departure and return sequence feel comfortable every time?

That is the heart of my Dock-to-Gulf approach. The home, dock, lift, canal and boat should function as one connected system.
