Coming Home Over the Ono Island Bridge
White rail. Wide blue water. Pretty boats below. Then the island canopy closes around me—and I know I am home.
Every time I drive home over the Ono Island bridge, something in me softens.
The mainland can keep its noise. Up here, the white rail slides past the window and the water opens wide underneath—bright blue, boats at rest and boats easing through the channel, docks and covered lifts along the island shore, Orange Beach across the way and somehow already behind me. Salt air finds the open window. I feel it immediately: I am coming home to my oasis.

Boathouse. Turquoise chairs. Yellow kayak. Then the oaks take over.
Near the end of the bridge, the island meets me gently. A wooden pier. A little pitched-roof boathouse over the water. White sand, two turquoise chairs facing the channel, a yellow kayak pulled up on the grass. Then the canopy takes over—oaks, palms, shade—and the bright glare of the crossing gives way to the quiet green of home.
I love that view more than I can say in a listing sentence.
The pretty boats. The wide water. The promise of quiet waiting on the other side.
