When the Island Goes Quiet

My Guide to Generators on Ono Island

Guided by the Gulf. Grounded by Integrity — Meredith Folger Amon, Gulf Coast Expert Real Estate Advisor
Guided by the Gulf. Grounded by Integrity.

Why a whole-house generator can be one of the most practical upgrades to an Ono Island home—and how I would compare size, fuel, models, placement and cost before buying one.

Home Generators Ono Island in Orange Beach Alabama

There is a moment during a Gulf Coast power outage when an ordinarily lively house becomes almost unnaturally still. The air conditioner stops humming. The refrigerator goes quiet. The ceiling fans slow to a halt, and even the familiar glow from the kitchen disappears. Outside, the palms may still be moving and the water may still be shining, but inside the house, every modern comfort suddenly depends on how well we prepared.

As an Ono Island homeowner and local real estate advisor, I see a whole-house standby generator as more than a luxury feature. Properly selected and professionally installed, it can help protect food, maintain reasonable indoor temperature and humidity, keep essential lighting and communications operating, and support selected pumps, security systems and medical equipment during an extended outage.

It can also make leaving the island less stressful. An automatic standby generator is designed to detect a utility outage, start without someone standing beside it and transfer approved electrical loads through an automatic transfer switch. That does not mean a generator makes it safe to ignore an evacuation order. It means the house can have backup power after I have left, provided the generator, fuel system and property remain in safe operating condition.

“On Ono Island, I would rather choose a generator on a calm afternoon than try to understand kilowatts, propane tanks and transfer switches with a storm already in the Gulf.” — Meredith

Why a Generator Is Especially Advantageous on Ono Island

Ono Island has underground electrical utilities, which is a meaningful advantage, but underground service cannot prevent every regional transmission failure, substation problem or widespread outage following severe weather. Island access, coastal exposure, heat and humidity make dependable backup power particularly valuable.

A thoughtfully designed generator system may help maintain:

  • One or more air-conditioning systems, depending on generator size and load management
  • Refrigerators and freezers
  • Essential interior and exterior lighting
  • Internet equipment, device charging and security systems
  • Well, sump, drainage or other property-specific pumps, where applicable
  • Selected kitchen appliances and outlets
  • Medical or accessibility equipment
  • Pool equipment when specifically included in the electrical design

I would not assume every appliance can operate simultaneously just because a generator is marketed as “whole house.” Electric water heaters, ovens, clothes dryers, pool heaters, multiple large HVAC compressors and boat-lift motors can create substantial demand. The best system is not necessarily the generator with the largest number on the brochure. It is the system designed around the home’s actual loads, priorities and fuel supply.

The First Ono Island Question: What Will Fuel It?

As of 2026, Ono Island does not have natural-gas service. Propane is therefore the practical fuel choice for most permanently installed residential standby generators on the island. Some larger systems can be configured for diesel, but propane is common because it stores on the property and works with many widely available residential generator models. I explain the island’s utility arrangement in more detail in my guide to utilities on Ono Island.

This makes the propane tank part of the generator—not an afterthought.

Tank size, permitted placement, whether the tank is owned or leased, fill percentage, other propane appliances and expected generator load all affect runtime. A homeowner who wants to operate one HVAC system and essential circuits has a different fuel plan from a homeowner expecting to run several air conditioners, a pool system and an all-electric kitchen.

For perspective, Generac lists its 26 kW Guardian at approximately 2.06 gallons of propane per hour at half load and 3.63 gallons per hour at full load. A nominal 500-gallon propane tank is typically not filled to its full stated capacity, so actual usable fuel and runtime must be confirmed with the propane provider. Using Generac’s published consumption only as a rough illustration, 400 usable gallons would represent about eight days at a continuous half load or roughly four and a half days at a continuous full load. Real usage will vary as electrical loads cycle, and the tank may also serve fireplaces, cooking or water heating. Generac 26 kW specifications

My advice is simple: size the generator and size the fuel plan together.

Standby or Portable: Which Makes More Sense?

Permanently installed standby generator

For many Ono Island homeowners, this is the strongest long-term solution. It can start automatically, use a dedicated propane supply, operate through an automatic transfer switch and provide remote status or service alerts on many current models. It is also the most convenient choice for a second home or for an owner who may be away when power is interrupted.

Portable generator

A portable unit can be less expensive and may keep a refrigerator, lights and a few carefully selected devices operating. It requires safe outdoor placement, fuel management, correct cords or professionally installed connection equipment, and someone who can set it up under safe conditions.

I would never operate a portable generator in a home, garage, carport, crawlspace, enclosed porch or other enclosed or partially enclosed location. Current federal safety guidance advises using portable generators outdoors and at least 20 feet from windows, doors and attached garages. A portable generator must never be connected to a wall outlet to “backfeed” a house. Ready.gov power-outage guidance

For an owner who wants automatic operation, central-air capability and less hands-on work during an outage, a professionally installed standby unit is usually the more appropriate conversation.

What Size Generator Works Best on Ono Island?

I would never recommend a generator from square footage alone. A licensed electrical professional or authorized dealer should calculate the home’s starting and running loads, review the electrical panels, identify the largest motors and decide whether load-management modules or soft-start equipment are appropriate.

Still, these ranges are helpful for an initial conversation:

Generator rangeWhere it may fitImportant limitation
12–14 kW Essential circuits, refrigeration, lights and possibly one appropriately sized HVAC system Usually not a true everything-at-once solution
18–20 kW Many mid-size homes using thoughtful load management Multiple large electric appliances may need to be sequenced
22–26 kW A common starting range for larger homes wanting broader whole-home coverage Actual output may be lower on propane or natural gas depending on model; load calculation remains essential
30–48 kW Large custom homes, multiple HVAC systems, substantial electric loads or owners wanting fewer compromises Higher equipment, installation, fuel and maintenance costs; often liquid-cooled
60 kW and above Very large residences or unusually demanding electrical designs Requires a project-specific engineered approach and a serious fuel plan

Air conditioners are often the deciding factor because compressors demand a surge of power when starting. Two generators with similar running-kilowatt ratings may have different motor-starting capabilities. I would ask the installer to show me, in writing, which HVAC systems can start, which loads are managed and what happens if several large appliances call for power at once.

My Current Shortlist of Generator Models

There is no single “best” generator for every Ono Island home. Local service availability, installer experience and access to parts matter as much as the name on the enclosure. These are the models I would include in a serious 2026 comparison.

Best overall comparison for many Ono Island homes: Generac 26 kW Guardian

The Generac Guardian 26 kW is compact, uses an aluminum enclosure and can operate on propane or natural gas. Generac currently lists the generator-only model from approximately $6,989 MSRP, while a package with a whole-house transfer switch starts around $7,899 MSRP. On propane, the model is rated at 26 kW; its published natural-gas output is lower. Remote monitoring is available through Generac’s Mobile Link platform. Generac 26 kW generator | Generac 26 kW with transfer switch

Why I would consider it: broad dealer familiarity, compact footprint, aluminum enclosure, strong output and remote monitoring.

What I would verify: local authorized service response, final propane consumption, transfer-switch configuration, placement clearances and whether the home’s HVAC starting loads require additional management.

Best premium air-cooled alternative: KOHLER 26RCA

KOHLER currently lists the 26RCA from approximately $7,445 MSRP before customized installation and dealer-selected options. It operates on propane or natural gas and includes close digital voltage regulation. KOHLER also offers app-based monitoring and maintenance history. KOHLER 26RCA

Why I would consider it: strong brand reputation, polished monitoring options and a good fit for homeowners who prefer KOHLER’s dealer and service network.

What I would verify: whether the quoted package includes the correct automatic transfer switch, cold-weather or coastal accessories if recommended, battery, delivery and commissioning.

Best for strong motor-starting capability: Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect 26 kW

The Briggs & Stratton 26 kW PowerProtect is rated at 26 kW on propane and 24 kW on natural gas. The company highlights its motor-starting capability, which is important when large air-conditioning compressors are part of the plan. Published normal operating sound is approximately 65 dBA, and the PowerProtect+ version has been listed near $7,336 MSRP. Briggs & Stratton 26 kW specifications | PowerProtect+ pricing

Why I would consider it: impressive starting capability and a commercial-grade Vanguard engine.

What I would verify: the strength of the authorized service network serving Ono Island and exactly which warranty applies to the quoted model.

Best quiet-operation comparison: Cummins QuietConnect RS25

Cummins describes the RS25 as a 25 kW residential and light-commercial standby generator with a sound-attenuated, weather-protective enclosure. The QuietConnect line is advertised at approximately 65 dBA or lower, comparable to normal conversation under stated conditions. Cummins pricing is generally quote-based for this model. Cummins RS25 | Cummins QuietConnect series

Why I would consider it: quiet-operation emphasis and a respected power-system manufacturer.

What I would verify: exact residential configuration, fuel, transfer switch, local service coverage, lead time and total installed price.

Best essential-circuit value: 14 kW class

For a smaller home—or an owner who wants air conditioning, refrigeration, lighting and essential circuits rather than every electric appliance—a 14 kW unit may be the wiser investment. KOHLER lists the 14RCA from approximately $4,997 MSRP. Generac lists its 14 kW Guardian from approximately $4,569 MSRP, or around $5,139 MSRP with a 16-circuit transfer switch. KOHLER 14RCA | Generac 14 kW | Generac 14 kW transfer-switch package

Why I would consider it: lower equipment and fuel costs when the owner is comfortable prioritizing essential loads.

What I would verify: whether it can actually start the intended air conditioner on propane and what appliances must remain off.

Best direction for a large custom residence: 30–48 kW liquid-cooled

Some of Ono Island’s larger homes have multiple HVAC systems, elevators, extensive refrigeration, pool equipment and heavy electric loads. An air-cooled 26 kW unit may require too many compromises. KOHLER currently lists liquid-cooled residential models including 38 kW from approximately $22,949 MSRP and 48 kW from approximately $25,703 MSRP. Cummins offers RS30, RS36 and RS40 classes on a quote basis. KOHLER generator range | Cummins RS30

Why I would consider it: stronger continuous-duty characteristics and more capacity for a large electrical design.

What I would verify: engineered load calculation, propane-vaporization requirements, tank capacity, sound, service access and whether critical loads should be separated from luxury loads.

What Does a Generator Cost on Ono Island?

The online equipment price is only one line in the budget. A complete installation may include the generator, automatic transfer switch, battery, pad or engineered elevated platform, propane tank, regulators, gas piping, trenching, electrical work, load-management modules, permits, association review, startup and inspection.

For early planning—not as a contractor quote—I would use these broad 2026 ranges:

SystemApproximate equipment rangePossible installed planning range on Ono Island
12–14 kW essential-circuit system $4,000–$5,500 $10,000–$16,000
18–20 kW standby system $5,500–$7,500 $12,000–$20,000
22–26 kW broader whole-home system $7,000–$9,000 $15,000–$25,000
30–48 kW liquid-cooled system $18,000–$30,000+ $32,000–$60,000+

These installed ranges are my conservative coastal-planning allowances, not manufacturer quotes. A straightforward installation close to the electrical and propane connections may cost less. A long fuel run, large or buried propane tank, difficult access, service upgrade, extensive load management, custom screening or elevated structural platform may cost considerably more.

Cummins publishes a general professional-installation estimate of roughly $2,000–$4,000 for conventional installations, but Ono Island projects can include coastal, propane, access and elevation work beyond that general allowance. Cummins generator cost guide

Coastal Placement Matters as Much as Brand

This is where I would slow the conversation down. A generator can be beautifully installed and still be poorly located for flood exposure, exhaust, service access or noise.

Before approving a location, I would ask about:

  • The property’s flood zone, elevation certificate and site-specific design flood elevation
  • Required elevation of the generator, transfer switch and associated electrical components
  • Manufacturer clearances from walls, windows, doors, soffits and combustible materials
  • Exhaust direction and carbon-monoxide safety
  • Access for routine service and eventual replacement
  • Distance from bedrooms, porches and neighboring outdoor living areas
  • Propane-tank location, delivery access and regulator requirements
  • Salt-air exposure and whether the enclosure, fasteners and maintenance plan are appropriate for the coast
  • Drainage around the pad or platform
  • Screening that does not restrict ventilation or violate service clearances

FEMA mitigation publications consistently emphasize elevating generators and critical electrical components above applicable flood elevations. The exact requirement for a residence must be determined from current local rules and the property’s specific flood information. FEMA flood-protection guidance

Because Ono Island is governed by community standards in addition to county requirements, I would verify current Ono Island Architectural Control Committee requirements and Baldwin County permitting before ordering equipment or pouring a pad. I would also call 811 before any digging and use appropriately licensed electrical, propane and construction professionals.

Features I Would Pay For

If I were comparing proposals for my own home, I would give extra weight to these items:

Automatic transfer switch

This is the “brain” that detects the outage, transfers approved loads to generator power and returns the home to utility power when service is restored. I would want the exact switch model and amperage shown in the proposal—not simply the words “transfer switch included.” KOHLER automatic transfer switches

Load management

Load-management modules can prevent several high-demand appliances from starting simultaneously. In some homes, thoughtful load management can provide a better experience than simply purchasing a larger generator.

Remote monitoring

For a second home, remote status and maintenance alerts are especially useful. I want to know whether the generator exercised successfully, whether it has an alarm and whether a service professional can see the same information.

Aluminum or coastal-appropriate enclosure

Salt air deserves respect. I would compare enclosure material, finish, fasteners and the installer’s coastal-maintenance recommendations.

Local service strength

The best generator is the one a qualified technician can maintain and repair. Before choosing a brand, I would ask who provides warranty service on Ono Island, how quickly parts are typically available and whether the installer offers a scheduled maintenance agreement.

Maintenance: The Quiet Part of Generator Ownership

A generator should exercise regularly and be inspected before hurricane season. Depending on the manufacturer, runtime and conditions, service may include oil, filters, spark plugs, battery testing, valve inspection and software or controller checks.

Briggs & Stratton recommends annual maintenance by a qualified technician, confirming that the unit is completing its scheduled exercise and checking the controller or monitoring system for alarms. Generac also publishes annual-maintenance requirements for its residential standby lines. Briggs & Stratton quick-start guidance | Generac annual maintenance

My own checklist would include:

  • Annual professional service before peak hurricane season
  • Battery age and condition
  • Exercise history and fault codes
  • Propane level and automatic-delivery arrangement
  • Clear airflow and service space around the enclosure
  • Corrosion inspection
  • Updated load list after renovations or new appliances
  • Current installer, propane-provider and warranty contacts
  • A test of remote monitoring before leaving town

Does a Generator Add Value to an Ono Island Home?

I would never promise dollar-for-dollar resale recovery. Real estate does not work that neatly. I do believe a properly permitted, well-maintained standby generator can make an Ono Island home more appealing because it answers a practical coastal-living question before a buyer has to ask it.

For sellers, documentation matters. I would organize:

  • Generator make, model, serial number and rated output on propane
  • Installation permit and final inspection records
  • Transfer-switch and load-management information
  • Propane-tank size and whether it is owned or leased
  • Warranty documents
  • Maintenance invoices and service agreement
  • Operating manual and monitoring instructions
  • A clear list of what the generator is designed to power

For buyers, I would not accept “whole-house generator” as the entire answer. I would ask what it powers, how it is fueled, where it sits relative to flood elevation, when it was last serviced and whether the propane capacity is appropriate for the expected loads.

My Bottom-Line Recommendation

For many Ono Island homes, I would begin by comparing three professionally sized propane systems: the Generac 26 kW Guardian, KOHLER 26RCA and Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect 26 kW. I would add the Cummins RS25 when quiet operation and local service support make it attractive.

For a smaller home or an owner comfortable with essential circuits, I would compare 14–20 kW options and invest in intelligent load management. For a large custom home with several HVAC systems and substantial electrical demand, I would move directly to an engineered 30–48 kW liquid-cooled discussion rather than forcing an air-cooled generator to do a job it was not selected to do.

Most importantly, I would choose the installer and service plan with the same care as the generator. On an island, reliability is not a brochure claim. It is the combination of correct sizing, adequate propane, safe elevation, sound electrical work, routine maintenance and a local professional who answers the phone.

Questions I Would Ask Every Contractor

Before choosing a generator installer, I would ask:

  1. Do you currently install and service generators on Ono Island?

  2. Are you properly licensed and insured in Alabama?

  3. Are you factory-authorized for the generator brand you are proposing?

  4. Does the estimate include a written electrical load calculation?

  5. Is the quoted generator capacity based on propane output rather than natural-gas output?

  6. Are the transfer switch, load-management modules, concrete pad, elevation requirements, gas piping, and propane tank included?

  7. Who is responsible for permits, inspections, utility coordination, and Ono Island approval?

  8. Does the placement comply with flood, clearance, ventilation, noise, and manufacturer requirements?

  9. What is included in annual maintenance, remote monitoring, and warranty service?

  10. Who answers the telephone when the generator fails during a storm?

A whole-home generator is only as dependable as its installation and service plan. I would gladly help my clients understand how generator readiness, elevation, insurance considerations, and other coastal-home features may affect a property search on Ono Island.
