When people ask me what makes Ono Island in Orange Beach so magnetic, I often answer with one word: access. Not just Gulf access, but the kind of everyday, grab-your-rod access that comes from living next to a working estuary. Old River, Bayou St. John, the Intracoastal Waterway, and Perdido Bay create a network where fishing can be a quick hour at the dock or a full-day run toward Perdido Pass and the Gulf of America.
When people say “big game fishing,” they are usually talking about offshore fishing that targets fast, powerful, open-water species that run long, hit hard, and test both equipment and crew. Around Orange Beach, it is more than a hobby. It is a seasonal rhythm you can feel at the docks, at the weigh-ins, and even in the way boat-ready homes hold their value. And from Ono Island, that offshore world can feel surprisingly close, with protected water at home and big-water opportunity nearby.
St. John Drive sits on the north side of Ono Island, with Bayou Saint John as its front yard and a ribbon of residential canal water running alongside. When I look at aerial views, I always notice the same signature: long finger piers reaching into the bayou, plus a neat line of covered boathouses tucked into calmer canal water. It feels quietly coastal, with wide sky, salt air, and that tea-tinted bayou color that comes and goes with tides, wind, and sunlight.
